Could my blood blister be infected? What should I do?
I have a small blood blister right where a person would get an ingrown nail on my pointer finger. The whole tip of my finger is red and swollen and has been like that for about 24 hours. I got this at work when my finger got stepped on my a large dog (I work in a grooming salon). Last night the pain was severe. I have had blood blisters, and this one hurts a LOT worse than any I have had before. When I went to bed the pain was around a 7/10 but since I've gotten up the pain is less severe, maybe a 4/10 unless someone hits it, then it skyrockets. Last night it was so bad that if someone or something touched it I wanted to be sick the pain was so bad. I know I have a low pain tolerance, a very low one. But I know they shouldn't hurt this bad. I'm not sure if it's infected or if it's because of the area it's in.
Also, people are telling me to pop it. However, wouldn't that just create a higher chance of infection and create even more pain?

I'm thinking that you may have an abscess, which is a pocket of infection under the skin. It's pretty common around fingernails and toenails.
Yes, normally it's better to leave blood blisters alone. But an open blood blister is no different from any other cut or open wound. If it's an abscess that's gotten to the blister stage, it will open on it's own soon enough.
But you'll be better off lancing it under clean conditions: wash your hands, and lance it with a sterile needle. Let the blood and pus drain out, wash it, put on some antibiotic ointment and a band-aid.

The blood blister is most likely not infected. I suggest breaking the skin, because the pressure will be off of the nail, and it will now be able to heal. Instead of popping the blister, you can try to take a pin and create a small hole to relieve the pressure, and then drain it. This will not make it hurt more -- just be able to heal faster.

Any open wound can get infected, so avoid popping the blister for as long as possible. It will heal under the blister.
