Weird, but why would an older cat become more vocal (sleep moans)?

I have a 12 year old female that has recently become a bit more vocal. She has never really meowed much, but I've noticed her vocalizing more in her sleep. Specifically those little moans cats will make while they stretch in the midst of a nap... I've been hearing her make those noises at 10 minute intervals lately (which is way more frequently than I'm used to), usually when she's next to me and I reach over to pet her every time I hear her stir. Seems like she is unconsciously doing it to get attention or some comforting petting. Is this an early symptom of senility, or am I tripping?

She doesn't appear to have changed in any other way, and shows no sign of discomfort or pain. Of course I would bring her to a vet if I thought something was wrong, but I'm not sure anything is at this point.

Dementia is one possibility, but at 12, she is still fairly young. Yes, a senior, but no where near a geriatric cat.

A cat that is going deaf gets more vocal, but you indicated it occurs in her sleep. Deaf cats or those with dementia are vocal when they are awake.

It may be a result of something she is dreaming (and yes, cats can dream). But since you come over and pet her, she may simply be training you. She makes sounds, and she gets petted.

Yeah u might want to take ur cat to the vet..

When my cats started vocalizing more in a few months they kind of got sick and there were more and more visits to the vet..Vocalizing can mean that there might be something wrong. Or your cat could just be meowing for her pleasure. But u should take her to the vet just in case.

I would just call your vet and ask their advice a lot of the time techs will either give you advice or they will ask the vet and call you back at a later time and recommed whether you need to go in or not

With hearing loss this is common to be a bit more vocal.

If you can afford a vet, you should go now... This maybe sign something...

Do you give your cat a more attention?
