Has anyone out there experienced a botched spinal fusion?

How are you managing your post-op lives? I have to sleep on a reclining chair, because a flat bed causes much pain and very little rest. Docs tell me there is very little they can do. Maybe yes/maybe no. I'd like to hear what others are doing about pain. Opiate derived drugs leave me heavy, slow witted, and constipated. And for the record, I visit an orthopedic doctor once a week. Right, both he and I are disappointed. Your experience, please?

I have seen many unsuccessful spinal fusions. These were folks sent in for a second or third opinion. They were treated by different surgeons, some who did the surgery for back pain instead of leg (nerve) pain.

When a surgeon asks to do surgery for back pain, then the likihood of long term success is low.

It is also low for patients who smoke, or will not follow recommendations. Also, many are drug abusers who have an addiction. Some surgeons are more aggressive in recommeding surgery as they get paid well to do this procedure. They are not so eager to see you in follow up after your surgery does not help you.

Luckily, I worked with a spine surgeon who did not operate for back pain, thus, he had good results with those he operated on to relieve the leg pain that comes from pressure on nerves. His patients were very happy and got good relief.
