    salient (important) refers to things like what they contribute to today's civilization. Well, you can think of language (Rosetta Stone), calendar (Egypt), money, communication, metal (copper, bronze, iron), navigation, agriculture and domestication of animals (Mesopotamia -the wheel), biotechnology (beer, cheese, wine), music, art, literature (Classical Greece), religion (Sumerians), philosophy, endless.
