This is the story of a ' beauty contest ' among the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite for the award of the " fairest of all ".
The story had been told and retold many times. The story may have been distorted, developed or embellished to suit their own ends.
Inevitably, some of the original meanings, ideas or tales may have been lost along the way.
This story began when Eris or Iris ( goddess of discord ) gatecrashed the party of the deities in Mount Olympus.
She offered the Golden Apple for the " Fairest of All ".
Hera, Athena and Aphrodite were eagerly vying for such an award.
Zeus cleverly avoided the issue of being the judge, and instead chose Paris the brother of Hector to be the judge. ( This event was before the Trojan War.)
It was known that the contest took place in Mount Ida.
Hera offered Paris political power, Athena wisdom of war and Aphrodite the ' hands ' of Queen Sparta the most beautiful woman.
Each goddess yearned to be judged the fairest of all.
So each goddess undressed and presented oneself naked hoping to be more appealing than the other two.
However, Paris was more interested in the beauty of Queen Helen, and ' dying ' to know her.
After inspecting each of the three contestants,Paris decided to accept the offer of Aphrodite.
Thus, Aphrodite was awarded the Golden Apple inscribed with the words : " Fairest of All ".
On the way back home, Paris abducted Queen Helen and brought her to Troy, and Aphrodite had no choice but to fulfil her promise ...... and making Helen fell for Paris.
This was the start of the Trojan War which lasted almost ten years and the downfall of Troy.
( As there was no request for details of the Trojan war ..... so the story needs to cease as necessary to avoid the perpetual repetition. )

The man was Paris, Prince of Troy. Athena, Aphrodite and Hera came to him and asked who was the most beautiful of the 3. Athena offered him great wisdom if he chose her. Hera offered him great political power should he choose her. And Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world if he chose her. Paris chose Aphrodite and she gave him Helen of Sparta (who later became known as Helen of Troy). Helen was married to Menelaus who was the king of Sparta. Paris took Helen back to Troy. This angered Menelaus who went to his brother Agamemnon, King of Mycenae. Agamemnon took advantage of the opportunity to attack Troy and gain more political power and territory. This is how the Trojan War began which lasted 10 years, involved the great demigod Achilles, and ended with the Greeks leaving a large wooden horse filled with their own soldier which the Trojans believed was a gift from the god Apollo and so they accepted it and brought it behind the walls of the city where at night the Greeks escaped the wooden horse and burned the city to the ground. Helen was then returned to Sparta and resumed being Menelaus' wife.
