A friend of mine happens to be a transvestite. (Not a particularly close friend, but someone I get along with rather well). She believes, in her mind, she is a woman despite being born with male genitalia. Now I'm sure you're probably grossed out by now... but that not the point.
One day, she woke up to find her home painted with grafitti with things like "move, fag!", "fags should die" and so forth... horrible, hateful, threatening stuff. Because somebody, apparently could not stand to live and let live.
Hard to feel safe in your own home after that.
Now let me ask you this: Has your home ever been vandalized and have you ever been threatened for being Christian?

I don't think most people are afraid of religion. Neither are most people afraid of homosexuality. That term is often used for hatred of gays, though that's not what it means.
