I think a lot of people are ruled by fear rather than logic which impacts the ability to think clearly.

They never take the time to learn the system. A large portion of society jumps right into the workforce and have a few kids, getting themselves in debt up to their eyeballs.

By living paycheck to paypcheck, living under stress and feeling you never have enough time, the average American is easier to control. They don't realize/care/or feel resistance is futile and this is how it's always been.

The truth is, the world is always changing. People, and the evils that come with vast money/power doesn't.

Hopefully now that we're advancing exponentially due to the Internet and loads of empirical data being accessible to the masses, good change will come.

They understand so little because the American media has failed at their irresponsibility as the peoples watch dog. In the name of fairness the media has allowed lies and deceit to become fact over the past decade. People in this nation cannot make sound judgments if the truth is being distorted but lying politicians who know the facts and the rules of Democracy but choose to ignore them. Fox News would be a prime example of a outlet that distorts Democracy. Other large networks like CNN, ABC and others are just as guilty when they allow politicians to repeatedly appear on news shows purposely lie in the name of fairness.

I can't really give you the answer that you want because 14 and I understand very little about how it works and I can't speak for the whole nation maybe because they're not interested because instead of learning about politics they want to learn how to play an instrument, read,spend time with their families,etc or because they just don't have enough time to learn how the system works because they have other things to do like raise their family,pay taxes,go to work you know stuff like that there isn't much time for them to learn how the government works

The media, plain and simple; coupled with apathy, to a large extent.

Plus, you can't keep anyone's attention for more than 30 seconds in this country.

Good luck teaching anyone anything.

Most never cared to learn for them in High School it was another pointless class. Besides they had stuff to gossip about.

Because they were taught lies in history class. They don't understand how the world works.
