CNOOC Ltd still has some significant hurdles to clear before it can go ahead with its high-profile takeover of Nexen, even after the Chinese giant secured the blessing of Canadian regulators.
Nexen interim chief executive Kevin Reinhart told Reuters on Monday that the proposed $15.1 billion deal was "nowhere near done".
He declined to comment on Ottawa's approval of the deal, which came on Friday after several weeks of contentious debate. He also would not comment on what still had to happen before the deal could close.
"It's in the press release, so that's all I'm going to say," he told the news wire as he was leaving a Calgary business conference on growing economic ties between Canada and Asia.
Nexen and CNOOC said in a statement on Saturday that the deal's closing remained subject to "the receipt of other applicable government and regulatory approvals, and the satisfaction or waiver of the other customary closing conditions".
Late last month, the companies withdrew and resubmitted an application to the US for its approval of the takeover. Nexen has significant holdings in the US Gulf of Mexico and Washington's approval is needed for the deal to go ahead.

it's only fair since US companies own rigs off CHina and the horrible thing is that the rig had a deep water type event and spilled oil all over Chinese shores and Chevron lied and covered it up.
He can'ts top the NExen purchases but might force sales. There are incentive for obama not to. China is making alot of compaints against US for protectionism.

Yours is the common Liberal reaction. in case you will have listened to his press convention he reported he has suspended all oil rentals and exploration on Federal land. He has close down one third of all kin oil production. this would reason tens of hundreds of jobs to be lost and raise gas fee. It became a political reaction to extra beneficial his time table to shrink united statesa.. There are over 3800 oil structures interior the Gulf that function with out incident. Shutting down one third of our kin oil production does no longer forestall one drop from escaping from the Deep Water Horizon. It does influence the economic gadget although.
