Dark Souls 2, what do you think?
So they are making a new Dark Souls, which is good of-course.
However they also say that it will be "more approachable".
Now what do they mean by that ?
Will there be more lore in the game ?
Will the story be more straight-forward, less complicated ?
Will they have multiple difficulty settings ?
If they add more lore into the game or make the storyline more understandable, I would have no problems with that, I like these games for the combat, not the lore.
I can't imagine them having one difficulty level and making that one easier.
They would loose most of their core consumers if they did such a thing.
They might have multiple difficulty settings, that seems like a realistic option if they want to reach more consumers.
I wouldn't like it having multiple difficulty settings though.
For one thing I don't consider Dark Souls to be such a difficult game, I die more times in the average FPS or Action game than I ever did in Dark Souls, or Demon's Souls for that matter. People die too much because they button-mash and/or are not careful enough.
If they have lower difficulty settings then people could easily button-mash their way through the whole game, which would damage the series' image as 'the thinking man's action-rpg'.
Or maybe "more approachable" simply means that you will get a map this time around...

I don't think that having an easier difficulty level will be an issue. The brutal standards of the previous games will still be there for traditionalists, just select Hard and ignore the other settings. Don't forget, a series continuation depends more on its sales than its cult following. Most experienced gamers loved Dark Souls and the challenge it presented, but the higher than usual difficulty standard did put off most of the casual gamer market, which is a DAMN big one if you think that Black ops 2 has sold over 8.5 million units, while Dark Souls has only sold 1.33 million (still high but could do better.) Developers are simply trying to make the series more accessible to a wider audience (ie make tons of money.) While this is selling out, it does at least mean that it is almost guaranteed that the series will continue into the distant future.
As to the rest of what was said: A more solid story would be nice as it was very weak, at least in my opinion, in the last 2 games (good thing the games where awesome otherwise I would have been really ticked off.) I'm sure the next game is going to be great, so don't worry. It's still too early to make any solid judgments.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b91BWzLigs that is my thoughts on the difficulty part(well...... not my thoughts). to sum up if there is an easy mode and you were really stuck instead of the mindset "oh i have to grind/practise/whatever to beat this boss" it'll be "i can always just go to easy mode" it ruins the experience.
what i hope they meant by more approchable is at most a bit longer of a tutorial, if you need one.
in Dark Souls you really had to piece together and think about the lore to understand and really get into it which i loved. i don't really like the idea of it being a movie where it's all handed to you
