Since non-profit charities, including churches, assist society, why do people want to tax them?

The non-profits take a strain off of government resources.

Update:

Half of all pastors of protestant churches in the U.S. have to be bi-vocational because those churches cannot support a full time pastor. And pastors and church employees pay income tax.

Update 2:

@Atheist

You don't know how churches conduct business. If a church has regular employees those employees are paying income tax. There is an IRS clause that allows pastors to opt out within 2 years of ordination but you will loose social security if you do so and most all pastors don't take that route.

    I think they should have to prove they are assisting society. Otherwise, it should be taxed. But as it stands now, religious organizations do not have to file income tax. They do not have to show where their money is going. In fact, many churches don't show anything at all when it comes to the money they take in or the charity they give out.

    Other non-profit charities must show what money comes in and what goes out... including any time put in by volunteers. If other non-profit organizations do not show this..... they lose their tax exemption immediately and can possibly lose their license. Religious organizations get special treatment. Which is actually unconstitutional. Equality is the foundation of our constitution. And somehow religious organizations have gotten a hand up on such things.

    You gotta point. But, if I could go to church sign that offering envelope throw money in it and have the church send our taxes to the government that would be a blessing and could embark on maybe donating money to like non-profit organizations that help take care of and manage our society then go out and help the other places in the world.

    To be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, an organization must be organized and operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private shareholder or individual. In addition, it may not be an action organization, i.e., it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates

    the government ought to care much less who makes money and how it particularly is spent. church homes are called the super city that has a kingdom over the kings of the earth. Revelation 17:17 whilst the television evangelists mentioned Bush might make a sturdy president he substitute into elected. whilst the church homes, faith! whilst the government is going to conflict they tell the greater youthful adult males to do their accountability and circulate. they bless the weapons and ammo and carry forth them into the trenches. so as long simply by fact the church homes help the governments of this international they're going to exist. TAX loose whilst the United Council of church homes in u.s. donates money to a presidential campaign that guy wins the election. continuously has, continuously will. With that style of help? who is going to rock the boat. thousands of thousands pay attention to television evangelists, deliver them money they are billionaires. might a president decide to lose that many citizens?

    Churches are not non-profit and harm society more than they help.
