Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day?

Since when can a single fish sustain you for an entire day? Are we talking about huge *** fish, like a shark? And just because you teach a man to fish, it doesn't mean they're going to eat for a lifetime. If they were in the position where some random stranger would have to teach them to fish to survive, they're probably lazy homeless people who will turn right back to begging for money, "cuz fishings too hard", or something.

**** this quote.

A regular fish is big enough to feed someone enough for a day. The fact that you don't think a fish is nearly enough only shows how privileged of a life you lived.

In addition, the assumption that homeless people are lazy beggars ALSO shows how ignorant and privileged you are. Most employers will not hire people who do not have a home address, and the 30% of homeless people only make minimum wage (which is not enough to live off of). A better complaint would be that homeless people couldn't afford the equipment to fish or cook a fish once they caught it.

It is a stupid analogy, but not for the reasons that you listed.

I'm not saying anything about the Cult of Christ, I am addressing your question.

You don't understand what people survived on for most of human history... You have the ability to go to the grocery store and buy food shipped in from all over the globe and you can get a Combo Meal for lunch that would be the caloric intake of a whole family...

A fish is enough protein to sustain the average person for a day... The fact that you choose to eat way more meat than you need doesn't make the statement inaccurate.

Secondly, the point of the quote is that a person should be self reliant and not depend upon the handouts of others to live.

It is just as accurate to say "Give a woman a welfare check and she'll feed herself and her kids for a month, give that woman contraception and job training and she'll feed herself and her kids for a lifetime."

You are picking and choosing and deciding that because you don't like this quote, it is utterly invalid.

This amounts to a personal problem regarding your need to justify negative feelings regarding independence and hard work, not a flaw in the quote.

This is one of the very very few passages in the bible that makes any sense.

Perhaps it's more about knowledge than fishing. Some people might feel perfectly at home letting others do the work for them, but if the people stopped doing the work, life suddenly goes the hard way! Knowing how to do for yourself places you in a much better position to survive than a person who has no desire to learn.

The bible says If a person does not work, he should not eat.

That goes for the same thing as if a person is lazy and will not work , his relatives does not suppose to keep on aiding and enabling him in his laziness.

    2 Thessalonians 3:12-16

Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

    1 Timothy 5:8

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever

    I would imagine he would very soon tire of fish. I prefer this version of the quote;

'Give a man a fire and he will be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he will be warm for life'

Would you rather help someone today?, or teach them how to help themselves for the rest of their life?

Make a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day.

Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
