Advice about spaying our dog?

My childhood dog, a purebred dachshund, recently came to live with me. She is 13 years old but she doesn't look or act elderly. We had decided not to get her spayed because we thought that at her age, she'd be more likely to have trouble with the surgery than with not being fixed (she has had litters in the past, so many of the health benefits wouldn't apply). However, a stray dog recently got into our yard, and she looks like she might be in heat, so there's a chance she's pregnant now. He's about twice her size, so not huge but definitely bigger than she is. In the past she had small litters (especially compared to her mother), and several times she was bred and didn't end up getting pregnant. I'm not sure if we should do an emergency spay or not-- would the surgery be more risky than a possible pregnancy, or less? Morally I'd prefer not to do anything abortive unless there's a high risk to her.

Before anyone criticizes me on it: yes, my parents were backyard breeders, but I am not.

The best thing you can do right now is just got to your vet and tell your vet everything. Your vet will know what to do.

I would take her in and get blood tests done to see if she was pregnant or not and then if so i would do the emergency spay especially if the male was two times her size! The litter would most likely kill her.If she is not pregnant take this as a sign and either spay her or be more careful during her heats

I would consult a vet. Or In about 3-4 weeks, take her to the vet so they can feel if she is pregnant, then I would recommend having a surgery done to remove the fetuses if she is. There is a chance she can't get pregnant, but if she does, especially since the male is so much bigger then her..The babies may kill her.

simply find a vet that uses an effective anesthetic regimen and laser for the surgery. She should definitely be spayed and there are protocols for ovariohysterectomies that are safe today even for the oldest and possibly diseased females.

I would take her to the vet immediately and have an emergency spay done on her.

She's too old. There's a risk the operation may kill her. Keep her indoors when she's in heat and don't let any other dogs near her
