Is it bad to open an essay with a question?
I'm in the midst of writing an essay for my English class about how Animal Farm relates to the quote "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" by Lord Acton. For my hook I used my first two sentences as follows, 'Does power truly lead to corruption, or is this merely speculation from people angry by powerful forces? Supremacy is a force that can either enrage or please, or at least make one submissive to absolute power.' Is this bad? Is it bad to start an essay with a question? If it helps, I believe this is an argumentative essay. Any help/advice is appreciated.

I'm I don't think so, I mean, I do it all the time. My Language Arts teacher said that it's IS a way to start something and hook the reader in so...i'm thinking it's okay.

It's good, but not great. Questions are very 5th-7th grade. Try starting it with even another quote that represents your own individual opinion about the topic.

I think its good because it gives the reader an idea about what your essay is mostly about.
