Ah, the triple conjunction. I read an article that said this happened during 7 BC, not 3 BC, but what do I know?
Yes, the triple conjunction of those planets, occurring three times throughout the year (whichever year it was) could account for the Magi first seeing the start of the process hundreds of miles away from Judea, working out when the second one would happen and so giving them time to prepare and travel the great distance to arrive in Jerusalem in time for the second conjunction. After their interview with Herod the Great, they would then see the third conjunction a little later, bringing them to the house in Bethlehem where Mary and the young child were. Interesting detail, that - not a stable, but a house. Of course, there need not have been a great lapse in time from the birth till the Magi found Jesus, but it certainly didn't happen on the night Jesus was born!
Yes, the triple conjunction seems to fit the bill, though I still don't know which year it happened - 7 BC or 3 BC.
