can you find out the size of a hole in the heart by going down someone throat?
My mother has told me that she is going to have the size of the hole in her heart established by looking down her throat, i have never heard of this, can anyone help clear up this for me.

TEE, trans-esophageal echocardiogram. The echo is done as close to her heart as is physically possible.

Without actually cutting something open the throat is the closest point to the heart they can reach with diagnostic tools. They will insert an ultrasound device partway down the throat to get the clearest pictures possible of the heart.
