if the catalytic converter is damaged is the car totaled?
I just accidently put 85 octane in my car that takes 87 octane, and it says in the manual that the catalytic converter may be damaged. Is the car totaled?
Thanks for the answers, just to add on to it,
In the manual, it says if the flashing engine light continues for an extended period of time, the engine could die so is this a major issue also?
And after I put the 85 octane in the car, my car is rocking and there is a loud pop coming from the back, I heard from a friend that I just have to let the gas go down to a quarter of a tank and then fill up with 93 gas to even it out, will this work?

A solid check engine light usually means an emission problem (like a bad cat). A flashing check engine light means a serious problem and you should not drive the car. Using 85 Octane in a car that needs 87 is a lot worse than using 87 in a car that uses 89 or 91. Most vehicle manufactures believe that 85 octane fuel is harmful to there cars.
One tank of 85 should not be a problem, but from what you describe, you do have a problem. Possible piston damage. If the check engine light is flashing, have it towed to a mechanic.

No. It probably didn't affect anything. If you were using leaded fuel, that could damage it. The difference between 87 and 85 octane is not very big, just don't use 85 octane regularly if your car requires 87 (that's more to prevent engine knock than save your cat) and even if you did damage the cat, it's replaceable (but usually not worth it)

Cats can go undesirable and rattle on the interior, yet damn is often the warmth shelter coming loose. That cost is insane. and that i does not enable Meineke empty my ash trays. They in all probability are undesirable at that age. you ought to use widely used cats if a sturdy muffler keep does the activity. or maybe OEMs could in basic terms run approximately $one hundred forty each and each.

The catalytic converter cleans the exhaust from your engine. The car actually doesn't need it to function. In certain states, there is pollution laws, so you might need to have it repaired in order to have your vehicle up to code.

Hell no the converter is fine that wont hurt it. the only thing will hurt that piece is age. You can get it replaced cheap if you look around. If your throwing codes for it then replace it othewise your fine. Not sure your question.
