My cat is 1/4 Russian Blue (at most) - what are the chances of blue kittens?
We have a gorgeous female kitten, with Russian Blue x DSH sire and DSH dam. She has soft, silver-sheened fur, big green eyes and mauve paws - slender legs but a little more chunky than purebreed Russian Blues. I love her phenotype and would definitely consider breeding from her, but need a little help calculating the probability of getting a kitty just like her. I am a biology student studying genetics and have been trying to work out the odds.
The blue fur gene, a diluting gene that dilutes black gene 'B' is recessive 'd'; lets assume a dominant allele is 'D' (no dilution) - Evie must have two 'd' alleles to express blue fur so she must be 'dd'. Her mother, a black DSH must have carried at least one allele for blue fur. If I stud her with a male purebreed Russian blue (who must also be 'dd') then all the kittens should have blue fur. Is this correct?

There is one flaw in your reasoning. The fact is that your kitten isn't a RB at all, just a domestic short hair no matter how much you think otherwise. NO breeder is going to offer you stud service from a real RB stud. And color inheritance isn't as simple as one allele. You don't know what is hidden in the genes for the black mother. It's the same thing as a human child who shows up with an unexpected eye color. I have brown eyes, my mother and father have green and blue. Her father has blue eyes. So on paper, my daughter should have had brown eyes - hers are blue. Same thing with your kitten, she probably has "more" to her color genes than blue. As a biology student I am sure you are familiar with genotype and phenotype. You have no idea really what her genotype is.
Get her spayed - there is no reason to bring more mixed breed kittens into the world. If you do that, you are a back yard breeder and contributing to the over 4 million cats and dogs, kittens and puppies who are put to death in shelters each year in the US alone, thanks to people who don't spay and neuter.

In essence, a Russian Blue cat is in effortless words a organic Russian Blue cat once you've a registered and criminal pedigree paper declaring so. also, you say that the kittens are not from now on finished Russian Blue pedigree, so in this social gathering you may not, for moral causes, promote and promote the kittens for sale as finished Russian Blues. the final public are extremely savvy about what they understand and choose at the same time as they are really searching for a pedigree cat as they are going to be searching for finished pedigree papers that were issued by technique of TICA, CFA ACFA or different valid international cat governing bodies, breeder/new proprietor contracts which assure the health and upbringing of the kitten to be vet checked, vaccinated, wormed, abode experienced and some people even ask that the kitten is already and properly microchipped and neutered. (All this expenses 1000's of money in holding with kitten). because your kittens are not from now on finished Russian Blue, they are truly a blended breed and in no way a organic breed, so that you may not fee for rehoming them, except for a nominal volume so that you're making certain the kittens a gorgeous good abode as those who elect to grant a kitten a gorgeous good abode will pay a nominal fee. this is a gorgeous good way of creating particular the kittens do not visit abusive properties or used for issues worse like laboratory experimentation kittens. the international has sufficient BYB breeders contributing to the overpopulation of undesirable kittens and cats, so do your Russian Blue woman a favour for her healthwise and also you from the hassle of kitten abode searching and get her spayed asap. playstation i'm a registered breeder of Maine Coons and that i ought to in no way breed any of my Maine Coon women to the different breed. it really is unethical and also you're not from now on doing the breed any favours by technique of diluting the breed pedigree. the completed factor of being an ethical breeder is to maintain and advance that diverse breed's health, temperament and conformation. go away breeding to individuals that understand the thanks to do it properly and ethically!!

even if the kittens turned out of be Blue, so what? No one gonna buy a mixed breed because you believe "since it looks like Russian Blue so I must sell it as a Russian Blue." Your Cat Doesn't Have AKC Certificate, Nor Will The Kittens Have. You Silly Backyard Breeder, Stop Being So Greedy.

You are correct. Blue to Blue will only get blue. HOWEVER, since she is NOT purebred, no reputable breeder would consider you breeding her under any circumstances. There are many blue kittens out there sitting in shelters with no homes.
All you will do is create more unwanted kittens. Best to spay her and keep her as a loving pet - she doesn't need or want to have any kittens.

You have a mixed breed cat. A reputable breeder will not let you breed with a purebred. You probably can't afford the stud fee anyway. It doesn't matter what the odds are, you have a mixed breed so whatever breeds the great great great great great parents were could show up. The world doesn't need any more mixed breed kittens. Shelters are overflowing with them now and killing them.

Wow. That is why I dropped A&P. That was confusing. I have Russian blue female but unfortunately she was already fixed when I got her. I also have to get rid of her because I'm moving and can't have her where I'm going. Sucks because i really enjoy her loving side not her finicky side much though. She is definitely female! Lol

Yes, you are correct
Source(s): I am going into wildlife biology, minor is genetics. You did the chart right. But out of the litter no blue kittens may be born.
