I want to bleach my hair, but Im worried about ruining it?

So at the moment, I have red hair. Its slightly damaged, the ends are a bit dry but Im working on fixing them. I really want to bleach my hair so I can dye it a lavender/pink colour, but Im worried it will just go brittle and fall out.

I wouldn't do it until my hair is fixed, but how could I avoid completely damaging it to the extreme, are there any products I could use to soften it as my friend decided to dip dye her hair, so she had to bleach the ends and they felt like straw afterwards.

Ive asked a hairdresser about it but they say not to as you have to keep up with it and all that, but Ive wanted to do this for a long while, help??

thankyou

highlight your hair in one appointment, then a few weeks later dye it the colour you want. it's a longer process but allows you're hairs natural oils to work better without bleach

You can't "ruin" your hair any more than you have already. That is the least of your worries.

You are correct to have a consultation with a qualified professional hair colourist. They are correct that there are many other things for you to consider, and retouches is one of them. You are going to have to do your "roots" every 6 weeks or so, depending on how fast your hair grows. (oddly, it always seems to grow the fastest when you bleach it -- the colour difference shows up very noticeably) You need to keep in mind that being blonde is not going to be cheap!

It is very rare that the hair will go brittle from a bleach. It can, certainly, and may have a bit of a dry feeling, but it almost never "falls out". I have seen some breakage on a few clients, but it is always growing back in and they might have short hairs all over.

To avoid extreme damage, you need quality products, and trained experienced operators. An amateur, like your friend, is not a good person to help you with this! I really think you should discuss this again with a qualified professional hair colourist to know what you are getting into. Ask about damage, about retouches, about cost, about after care -- you need all the facts before you do this. It is really hard (and a very long time) to get your hair back to normal after a bleach, so you want to be sure.
