Why do people say....?

I don't think the Second Amendment should apply to certifiable lunatics. otherwise, a well armed populace has a demonstrable deterrent effect on crime.

In that sort of situation, nothing would have helped. That maniac did what he did before anyone could do anything.

I'm in the UK, and we don't allow people to own or have guns except in certain circumstances (like farmers for rabbits and foxes) and out police don't carry weapons as a matter of course - but we had a similar tragedy at a school a few years back - the man broke all the rules.

But let's face it - if there was a 'no firearms' law in the USA it would have made this incident far less likely. When any ordinary person is allowed to keep a gun of any kind in his home, it's asking for trouble.

And if it was possible to enforce a law that only police and military had guns - that would make everyone safer. But sadly, I can't imagine it would be possible.

The emphasis is om the 1st word...."only".
