Leftists: why do you believe anything not reported by mainstream news must be false?

So often mainstream news plays catch up after the news is broken elsewhere or downplays the news until it gets to be a major story that can't be ignored without them appearing ignorant or complicit.

Update:

My question was prompted by the number of Yahoo answers I've seen that pretty much say "if it ain't in mainstream news it ain't true" or "it's another crazy conspiracy theory".

I could have made it a question for everyone but since most of those answers were in response to conservative posts I assumed them to be from a mostly leftist attitude..

I don't know anyone, left or right, who believes anything like you describe.

I don't trust much of what I read or hear in any media - I work to verify any info I have an interest in by using several sources, some that I've found to get things right more often than most.

Most mainstream news sources have the same struggles catching the full story or the accurate facts in a breaking story like the Connecticut shooting. Even eye witnesses give varying accounts, but people everywhere want to know as much as they can as soon as they can, so reporters try to fill that need in order to get viewers.

The best ones clearly state what is actually known from official sources & what is being told to them by witnesses - until the whole picture becomes clear.
