For NYC it must be under 4 inches, folding blade, and completely concealed on your person. If its cliped to your belt or pocket you technically can be summonsed for it.
Nyc admin code has legislation against:
Knife in view of public
Knife over 4 inches
Possession of razor less than 21 years old
And the NYS penal code has laws against:
Switchblades
Gravity knives
Daggers/dirks
Knuckle knives
