Mass Effect 1 Achievements: For the specialist achievments, must I use the talents/powers in combat?

I still have to get the Stasis and Singularity achievements; can I just use my powers when no enemies are around? Thanks!

    I believe you can use them on stationary items (locked on indicators), but you must use them on something or the achievement won't unlock.
