Anu, father of all gods, persuaded Mother Earth to create a huge wild man called Enkidu.

The wild man lived in the Wilderness and thought he was a beast of the night.

The other gods put an image of the wild animal into Gilgamesh's mind one night as he lay restless and disturbed by terrible nightmares.

That night he dreamt of a man so wild and untameable that he longed to capture and conquer him.

Gilgamesh was ready and the people were elated to see him dead.

At last here was a creature who might match the tyrannical Gilgamesh.

In the people's mind, the gods had answered their prayers.

But as they fought they began to respect each other's power. Eventually, exhausted, they fell onto their knees, kissed and embraced and from that day on they were the best of friends.

There were now two petulant rulers not one.

More troubles brewing in the horizon.

One version on the Epic of Gilgamesh, was discovered in thge library of King Ashurbanipal and dating from around 600 BCE, was written on 12 tablets of clay, each containing 300 lines of verse.

The natural assumption would be that Gilgamesh respects Enkidu after they fight because he has finally met his match. Although the text is very fragmentary at this point, this intuition seems to be confirmed when Gilgamesh introduces his new friend to his mother:

The mightiest [in the land, strength he possesses]

[His strength is as mighty as a] rock from the sky
