I dislike the practice because I sort of see it as a counterproductive measure. What I mean is, what's the point in going out of your way to choose a beautiful, feminine and elegant name for your daughter, only to entirely undermine the decision by giving her a, likely, shorter mannish nickname that will no doubt catch on with pretty much everyone in her life.
On the other hand, I don't really see anything wrong with it and, indeed, would prefer if people chose feminine first names and masculine nicknames. And if you do like masculine nicknames for girls then the first little paragraph I wrote doesn't at all count for you.
All in all, it's OK by my standards, but only if it's an obvious masculine nickname rather than a forced one. For example, I HATE "Charlie" for Charlotte - Charlotte may be the feminine variant of Charles but that doesn't excuse the fact that Charlie and Charlotte sound nothing alike. Something along the lines of Alberta "Bertie", Georgetta "Georgie" or Wilhelmina "Will" would be better and more appropriate, in my opinion.

I'm really not too crazy about boyish nicknames on girls:( I just think that a boys name should stay as a boys name and a girls name should stay as a girls name. However, if a girl turns out to be a tomboy, then i think masculine nicknames would be ok :)

It would depend on the name to me :p
I like Charlie as a nickname for Charlotte but I don't like Frank as a nickname for Frances. I also like Sam as a nickname for Samantha :)
