Another series thats very sad but has initial horror/gore for about 15 episodes out of 60 episodes, is Higurashi no naku 1 + 2, and Umineko:When they cry.
This series is initially horror but turns into a psychological thriller series after 15 episodes or so. Its a very sad predicament they are all in, but the series is A+
