It is based on an old Japanese legend (which turns out to be sort of true). Ancient plant life reawakens to turn Earth into a human-free garden, and it is up to a teenage girl and her friends to foil this plot. If they fail, she will have to sacrifice her own life as a last resort.

This anime has a bit of everything in it, genre-wise, including an ending you won't soon forget.

They just don't make 'em like this, anymore.

The first three episodes are a bit dark and gory, but don't rush to judgment, there are twists and surprises galore.

Another - Great mystery and fast paced plot.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - this one is going to twist your mind with all its psychologically insane elements.

Psychic detective Yakumo - it gives a darkish atmosphere and Yakumo is pretty smart.

Sola - i actually like things about youkai.

D-Gray man - it gives an obscurish sensation, maybe because it's night in almost every episode.

Rave Master was AMAZING. It was created by the same creator of Fairy Tail, so it has garnered a lot more fans recently.

Black Cat was another one, about a former assassin who quits and becomes a bounty hunter.

Mahoromatic - Killer android with tragic backstory is a maid and wants bigger boobies. Boobies warning.

Please Teacher! - You're married to your alien teacher. No problem, obviously.

Angelic Layer - A girl learns to play with fighting dolls. Set in same universe as Chobits. http://www.crunchyroll.com/angelic-layer

Kamichu! - Middle school girl becomes a god. As much romance as there should be in middle school.

Planetes - Space junk collectors. Realistic space travel.

Squid Girl - She's going to squidvade us all. Kid's comedy. 2 seasons subbed on http://crunchyroll.com/squid-girl

Croisee in a Foreign Labyrinth - Japanese girl goes to France.
