II find it incredibly awkward and don't see why they cannot appreciate privacy.
often you can even see someone in the next stall by reflection off the back wall...

Seriously though, there are enough idiots out there who would have a ****, or do drugs. Maybe it's to discourage that kind of thing. I remember ages ago encountering public restrooms in Europe lit with blue lights to discourage shooting up, but I haven't seen that in quite a while.
Edit: funny - that's the first time I realized you can't type w a n k on here.
Edit: Nothing at all. But generally other people don't want to see or hear it.
