Do you believe that Israel attacked the USS Liberty to try to get the US to attack Egypt?

As in they wanted the US to believe that it was Egypt that attacked it so the US would take out Egypt for them.

I helped design the Liberty. It had more than radar. It was after all electronic

signals, everything form the Israelis or Egypt. I don't believe they hoped to

get us into the war. They attacked it because it was listening to their every

radio transmission. I have read much on the subject, and one book said

they were killing prisoners nearby, and didn't want to be monitored. I think they

did it because they knew the cowardly LBJ and his crowd would do nothing.

And the always lying US media would lie for them.

The Liberty had a big parabolic dish on the aft deck, something Egyptians

    would not have.

    Yes.

This of course is why they attacked using aircraft and naval vessels clearly carrying IDF markings. It also why they stopped the attack of offered assistance - all to trick the American's into thinking it was the Egyptians doing the shooting.

Or the IDF really are not nearly as competent as their hype machine would lead one to believe and the screwed up big-time, mis-identifying their target as Egytian. This latter explanation is just a bit more plausible since the United States never bothered to inform their own 6th Fleet, let alone the Isreali's that the Liberty was there and that she was operating in waters Egypt had declared off-limits to all nuetral shipping (ie: only Egyptian warships were likely to be found there). Pile on that the long history of IDF cluster-effs (the IDF Navy being particularly bad) and you have all the makings of a tragic mistake of the kind that is unfortunately all too common in war.

Of course not. The US knew full well where the missile came from. Israel wanted to knock out the Liberty's radar so that we wouldn't detect Israel's attack on Egypt until after the fact.

Well that would be foolish on Israels side as the soviet union would have nuked Israel had the us attacked Egypt.

My guess is that they wanted to blind our interception of their communications.
