Can I play US PS1 games on an ASIAN PS3?

Yeah I have an asian PS3 and I am wondering If I can play US PS1 games on it.

    Yes, you can. But only with the ORIGINAL 60gb first generation model. otherwise no. i know this because i have one my self. it's now got the yellow light of death.

    I would guess no since PS1 games are still region locked !
