Just like today it depends on what role they were filling and what rank they are
Generally at the rank of 2nd or 1st LT they would be carrying a rifle and maybe a pistol (just based on the typical assignments that LTs hold)
At the rank of Captain and above generally just a pistol (once again just based on the assignments those Artillery Officers at those ranks hold)
But then again it isn't hard to get a rifle if you think you need one. My second deployment as a Captain I carried a rifle as well as my assigned pistol. There was no way I was going outside the wire with just a pistol.
