Is this a transmission problem, gears? What would be the cost to fix?

98 Saturn SL 5 Spd manual, 205K miles. CV joints make noise, engine leaks oil. However after coming to a stop, I put it in gear and it made a terrible noise in the transmission area.

It would go into gear, the linkage would move, but the car would not move. The speedometer would rise as I give it power through the gears, but the car would not move. When in neutral and clutch engaged, it makes some noise. It gear it makes terrible noises.

Update:

The clutch seems to work fine since it disengages the drivetrain.

It won't move at all. It could be an axle, but what about the other one.

What about a stripped gear?

From what I read that could be a couple possibilities but I do not think its your transmission I think it's your clutch master cylinder or a slave cylinder or clutch pressure plate throwout bearing I suggest take to an ASE certified mechanic and let him take a look and test drive the vehicle and he can quote you a price on how much it would be if it's just a clutch I do suggest replacing both CV axles

I'm leaning toward an axle, possibly the total failure of one of those noisy CV joints. Remember: with a normal, "open" differential, no resistance from one side means no power to the other side.

Or, it could be an internal failure in the differential itself.

It will be easy to tell with the car on a lift. You should hope I'm right: of all the possibilities folks have suggested, mine is about the cheapest fix.

suspect stripped drive flange or something in the axle
