300 ninja: $4799, seat height 30.9 inches, 68 MPG, curb weight 379lbs, fuel capacity 4.5 gallon

650 ninja $7599, seat height 31.7 inches, 50 MPG, curb weight 460 lbs, fuel capacity 4.2 gallon

To find out which bike fits you best measure your inseam with shoes on and pick the seat height that is slightly less than your inseam. This will insure that you can plant both feet on the ground at a stop. At 5'6" I am guessing that the 300 ninja will fit just about right. The 300 ninja was designed with the beginner in mind. Including reduced maintenance cost and the ability to run on standard octane gas. At 35 hp it has enough power to pass cars at highway speed. the 650 ninja is a street legal racer. High octane fuel, brakes that need frequent attenction. Valve maintenace more frequently. You can find all this information at Kawasaki.com Another bike to consider is the Honda CBR250R. Single cylinder 30.5 inch seat height, 24.5 hp. 80MPG. cost $4199 Much easier to pick up. Check it out at Honda.com

William, you're a newbie, take it like a man!

If you have to ask that means you don't ride, so coming from an an older more experienced rider/racer, there are two things that you should consider.

One- Buying a NEW bike as a starter bike is exciting but when you drop it it isn't (new riders have low speed drops.

Two- The bigger they are the harder they fall (and harder to get up).

Buy a nice clean used Ninja 250 to learn on, you can thank me and curse me but you LEARN one way or the either.

Lifting a fallen bike....if practical ie are not in a ditch...

Stand by the seat side lower yourself and put your hips against the seat - bend knees and push backwards.

Advantages you don't put your back at risk at a time when you are pumping too much adrenalin to care...
