How do I get into shooters?
So I really, really, hate shooters. I played Mass Effect with biotics, Deus Ex with pretty much only martial arts kills, Dirge of Cerberus with the hand claw thingies.
I just don't see why Halo and Call of Duty are so attractive! Is it because I'm a girl? Okay, well I will admit using the headset and talking is basically impossible, considering that most guys seem to like my voice....
Long story aside, the closest thing to a shooter I've liked is Portal. What are some storyline shooters that do NOT have an online community, and have some creativity/tact that a girl could appreciate?
Many thanks for your answers :)!
Any system is fine. I've got them all. Even the ROB robot.

First off you don't have to talk when playing. Like for example, I usually use my headset for the surround sound because it helps me gameplay wise.
Now onto to matter in fact. Just keep playing until you got a rhythm. Like for me I started with the first Black Ops and I was garbage at it and I hated how everyone was doing better than me. Eventually over time I started getting better and once you find that "rhythm" it gets addicting. Whenever you get that high score you get a strong feeling of accomplishment, and it feels great.
But everyone has their own preferences, so maybe you might never ever get that feeling of 20 head shots with a sniper.
Also watching people playing it get addicting as well :)

I'm not sure how suggesting good shooters is going to change your mind if you really really hate shooters but I'll name a few that are pretty good in my opinion and don't require others for online multi player. I don't use a console anymore (use PC) but some of these games can be found on various consoles if you prefer.
Half Life Series (SciFi)- Made with the same game engine as Portal so it might feel more familiar to you. It has a pretty good story line and uses some physics base puzzles to complete tasks and should last you quite a long time to complete. Not much exploring here pretty straight forward game play.
Fallout 3 (Post Apocalyptic) - Pretty good story line and graphics with quest based tasks and some puzzle solving. You also gather up stuff you find along the way and use the parts to cobble together items you can use on your quests, neat feature. It utilizes a target acquisition system (VATS) that was pretty cool when the game came out or you can run in guns blazing although I wouldn't advise that. Lots of exploration outside of the city areas.
Fallout 3 New Vegas (Post Apocalyptic)- Not as good story line as FO3 but maybe a little better with the gun play aspect not relying on the VATS system as much because of better weapons. Many of the same feature are present in here as in FO3, quests, puzzles, and item creation is taken a step further in the ability to disassemble and create new items from the parts.
Borderlands 1 (SciFi)- This game has a pretty good story with quest based missions but the gun play is what really sets it apart from most. There are many many guns and you will find that the best part of the game is pressing forward to find new and better weapons all the while upgrading perks for your character as you gain experience through combat. Has multi player cooperative play if you change your mind about online play. Nearly open world environment to explore.
Borderlands 2 (SciFi)- Just like the first one only better graphics and a so so story, again it's really about the guns. If I had to pick one of the two I would suggest the first game over the second. Has multi player cooperative play if you change your mind about online play.
The Elder Scrolls Skyrim (Mid-evil) - Very good quest based game with lots of stuff to do and it looks great. Just like in Borderlands you gain perks to upgrade your character to be better in combat as you gain experience points. This game also has items you can gather in the world that you use to create items. Open world environment to explore and many secrets to be found.
The Elder Scrolls Oblivion (Mid-evil)- Very good quest based game with lots of stuff to do and it looks pretty good for a game that's almost 10 years old. Good idea if you have a system that's a little older.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a first person shooter but the Tomb Raider series has some excellent puzzle and timing game play features which are the biggest draw for me. I would recommend the Tomb Raider Anniversary game, it's a very good version of the original game that's been updated with better graphics and a slightly different combat system.
Aside from the Borderlands 2 and Skyrim these games should be in the gaming bargain bins so it shouldn't hurt too much if you pick one up and find you don't like it.
On a side note I've been playing FPS for years and I don't really care for CoD either, there's nothing wrong with having an opinion about what you like and don't like. I also don't think it's a girl thing either, I have some friends (females) that are very good FPS players. Just remember, the idea of games is to have fun so...game on.
