When people make up names, why can’t they use traditional phonics?

Recently, on this site, I saw some names with very odd spellings. According to the writer, she and her husband chose unusual spellings “because that's what me and my husband like.”

However, her weird spellings had no relationship to standard phonetic pronunciations. So, in addition to the peculiar spellings, the names are nearly impossible to pronounce correctly, i.e. the way she intended.

The names are Luhcie Mae and Dahsea Phage. According to her explanation, “luhcie is Lucy… andDahsea is daisy.”

Um, no. With a spelling of Luhcie, this name is properly pronounced as LUH-see not LOO-see. Yes, that first syllable rhymes with uh-oh. Using the spelling of Dahsea would result in the pronunciation of DAH-see-ah, dah-SEE-ah, or DAH-see but couldn’t be pronounced as DAY-see. AH and AY simply do not sound the same. She didn’t give a pronunciation of Phage but I’d guess she intended Paige instead of Faige.

Somehow, spell checking recognized Luhcie as Lucie and Dahsea as Daisy but, for the life of me, I don't see how.

I assume the program is designed to find something that might be remotely close.

Still, that leaves pronunciation of these names a bit difficult.

Not everyone who meets these children will have a spell checker handy to translate for them.

I just find it terribly confusing when the pronunciation and the spelling don’t match at all.

Maybe these people should consider purchasing “Hooked on Phonics”.

Phonics is a system letter-sound correlation – saying words with the proper sounds attached to the proper letters/groups of letters.

Anyway, there really is a question in all this.

Do you feel that parents cause problems for their children when they make up pronunciations that have no bearing on the spelling that they’ve chosen?

The only reason I can understand changing the spelling of any name, (if you absoloutely must) is when the changed spelling gives you the "right" pronunciation, or the one you want.

There was a question on here about the name Malachi and how to spell it for it to be said "Mal-a-Kye" and not "Mal-a-kee" That, I do kind of get.

But the changing of a relatively "common" normal, well known name, to make it unique, it just shows the intelligence level of the person really. Its that same with the morons who take a boy's name and spell it "differently" to make it more girly! Why? You've chose a boys name, hence it being boyish! Sorry, I've digressed!

Yes I do. I also think they attach a stigma to their child, because people judge them on their "unique" spelling. They will be think "oh so you come from one of THOSE families" Which is unfair for the child.

When I read the names before I didn't really recognize them as what they were supposed to be. Luhcie wasn't too bad but Dahsea was a mess and a phage ,has something to do with microorganisms or something. I completely agree that some people are just adding letters to make it creative without actually trying to match the sounds anymore. Then again English is a tough language and most people never learn how to read the pronunciation guides because they simply don't get it. PH makes the F sound and any vowel followed by and H makes it short but not everyone knows this. It just goes to show the education level of people when they choose to use "creative" spellings and end up ruining the name. Sometimes creative works but in this case the names don't even resemble the names they are meant to.

I truly don't understand why people care so dang much on how they want to spell THEIR childs name. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I agree with her spellings because they are completely and utterly atrocious but still, that's just how some people prefer it.

I'm sure it will cause problems for the child but it's kind of like my name, Sarah. Since I have an H at the end of mine I'm CONSTANTLY asked "with or without an H". It's the most annoying thing ever! There are plenty of names out there with alternate spellings which, even the normal ones, cause problems.

Yes they cause so many problems for the child. I don't see how parents can't see that. I ran across a spelling of the name Sophia as Sopheighyah, because the mother was in love with the "eigh" way of spelling....Why, oh why do that???

Another thing I find annoying are the names Sean and Phoebe. Neither name is pronounced the way they are spelled! When I look at the boys name Sean, I say SEEN. the word "bean" is pronounced with the double "ee" sound, I don't see why the name Sean is not spoken the same way. When it is spelled Shawn or Shaun, then you have the right sound and pronunciation.

When I look at the girls name Phoebe, I say FOE-BEE. Where in the world does "oe" sound like "ee"??? It drives me crazy sometimes!!

the spelling will hurt their children, not only when people can't pronounce their name (lifelong), but when they try to learn to spell their name. They won't have it easy. They are trying to be different and unique, but that can be just damaging.
