How do the Pokemon GBA batteries work?
Do they start to run dry the moment they are made, or as soon as a save file is started? I know that batteries age, but should I be able to play a while on the sealed Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald versions I plan on opening?

The internal batteries inside GBA cartridges begin to run dead the moment the are activated by a Game Boy. This was an issue made several years ago and Nintendo has offered to replace the battery at the cost of your save file. What it means is that it will stop all time based actions in the game from happening, ex. planted berries will no longer grow. I had this happen to me about 5 years ago with Sapphire, I was still able to play it for 2 years after it informed me the internal battery had died, and probably still now if I hadn't lost it.
So your options are to send it to Nintendo for a small amount of money to replace, or try to fix it yourself using this video.

Good luck. :)
