PS3 Fan noise Issue?? (Read!?)?

Hi,

i have had a "Fat" 80GB PS3 since 2009, and about 3-5 months ago, i noticed it to be making a loud, irritating fan noise after about 15-20 minutes gameplay. This happened during the summer period, so i assumed it would stop when it wasn't as hot. I don't use the PS3 an awful lot, or at least not as much as some people. I probably vary between 14 to zero hours a week of use. I vacumed it, placed it on a raised platform, used a hairdryer on it, cover it up when not in use to no avail. It has loads of "Breathing" room.

Recently (About a month and a half ago) we got our computer Technician to have a look at it. I think he opened it up, gave it a clean, replaced the thermal paste and said it was fine and there was nothing wrong with it. And unfortunately, when i tried it the next day, it still made the loud noise. At that point, i simply put it down to it being an old (ish) system. Although once when it got loud, i left it on the XMB menu and it the fan noise actually ramped down a few notches (Got quieter...) A few days later, i did the "Fan test" on the PS3, and nowadays, whenever i leave it on the XMB menu, it never goes down a few notches. Is this because i did the fan test, or was it just a minor miracle when the noise went down?

Another quick question- I am planning to buy a set of turtle beach headphones for the PS3- Will this almost fully drown out the sound of the PS3 fan?

Finally...

-Please don't reply saying i'm going to Get YLOD... If i was going to get that, i'm pretty sure it would've happened by now, as the noise has been going on for a while!

Thanks for reading! Please reply, 10 PTS Given, or any other useful info you could provide!!

It's an older Fat model, and you've had it for many years. It isn't YLOD (though you are technically lucky you haven't gotten it yet, because the Fat models tend to get it around the 4-6 year mark irregardless). Then again, you said you took it to your computer technician and he replaced the thermal paste (which is actually good) because that's the most common reason why PS3's get the YLOD. YLOD is a major hardware failure that usually occurs from either the CPU or GPU (or both) separating themselves from the motherboard over time because the system melts the solders over time. It can happen from other things, but that is the most common reason why, so you shouldn't get the YLOD for a long time as long as the technician did it properly. Your PS3 probably would have gotten the YLOD within the year had he not changed the thermal paste for you (I'd thank him again if I were you).

When was the last time you vacuumed your PS3? If you let enough dust build up inside it, it will make it louder. Vacuum the front, sides and back of the system; do NOT use compressed/canned air! That can/WILL damage the system.

Also, the PS3 automatically increases or decreases the speed of the fan depending on what it's doing. While it'a on the XMB, it really isn't doing much. When your playing a game or movie, it's working harder, so it knows to increase the fan to keep itself cool. Every PS3 does it, it's needed. The Slim models are much quieter though, so if the noise is bothering you that much, you can always back up your data and buy a 160GB Slim (I don't recommend the Superslim models) and you can restore all your stuff onto that new quieter PS3.

By the way, NEVER do that "fan test" ever again. It can actually damage your system (which a lot of people don't realize). It's probably louder because you did that fan test. The cooling system in the Fat models weren't that great to begin with though. It could easily let the PS3 stay on over a month, but compared to the Slim models, the Fat models cooling system is not nearly as effective.

Also keep in mind that the older Fat models generate more heat than any other model. More heat = the fan will automatically increase the speed to keep cool. Hardware changes were made in the Slim models for it to use far less power, making it go easier on the cooling system by not generating as much internal heat, and it also makes it far less susceptible to getting the YLOD or breaking down in another way (though it still can, it's just really unlikely unless your an idiot with it or something). Also place the system vertically if you have it horizontal. It should help with airflow and thus make it a little quieter by itself.

As for your headset question, getting a TurtleBeach Headset isn't something I would recommend. TurtleBeach has decent quality, BUT it isn't durable at all. Quite frankly, if you just want to drown out the noise slightly, you turn the volume up on your TV or you just get the Official Bluetooth Headset and talk to your friends so you get distracted from hearing the noise. The Official PS3 Bluetooth Headset is the ONLY headset that allows you to use the system's High Quality function (meaning the sound is REALLY, REALLY good). You can also continue to talk to people while it's charging (which is something no other headset can do) and if you have other things that are Bluetooth compatible, that Official Headset, will actually pair with anything else. It's universal (they thought of everything, I know).

    Hope that helps.

I was the shorter, plumper girl. I'd been about 190, 200, most of my adult life. And I met my goal, ten weeks ahead of schedule. And feeling empowered, I decided to drop even lower. I never imagined that I would be 125 pounds, and go from a size 18 to a size 2.

Take it apart and clean the fans.

Check on youtube for steps on how to open your ps3.
