Day 14 - (Very Early) - Drive to London [6 Hrs, 48 min], leave that night to Chicago

Thank You!

Update:

Not planning on driving drunk! That is why it is stated at the end of the day.

Also, thanks for the head's up about parking in London and i'm sure now we will get our car before we leave for Canterbury.

Not worried about snow or bad roads because I am from the UP of Michigan and learned to drive when I was 14 in a blizzard. I know it's still opposite side of the road, but I've seen that before in Tanzania. Thanks for the tips, keep them coming!

Your estimates of driving times are far too low. Britain's roads are very congested, or in rural areas narrow and you will inevitably get stuck behind slow moving vehicles. You need at least two hours to drive from London to Canterbury, and 10 hours including one break to drive from Edinburgh to London, paticularly if it is a weekday and there is bad weather and or roadworks. Oxford to Monmouth will probably take 3 hours. Unless you take a realistio view of driving times you will get stressed out and will not enjoy your holiday.

I don't think Cardiff is worth visiting. It is the capital city of Wales, but the real attraction of Wales is the magnificent beauty of the rural landscape - Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia etc. You should definitely see Bath www.visitbath.co.uk and Ludlow www.ludlow.org.uk While in Monmouth drive up the gorgeous River Wye Valley and visit the Forest of Dean around the place called Symmonds Yat. As regards roads Britain is definitely second world and parking in city centres can be a problem. Look for 'Park and Ride' signs as you approach the edges of towns and cities. Don't even think about driving in central London. There is a daily congestion charge of £10 and the few parking spaces are very expensive. Buy a One Day travelcard and use the buses and Underground (Subway system) www.tfl.gov.uk Has your London hotel got car parking facilities? If not, do not collect your hire car until you are leaving London

I'm loving the "Get Drunk" on the itinerary!

Once place to add along the way between Oxford and Monmouth is Bath. A beautiful Georgian city which can be done in a day. You could just drive there for a late breakfast/early lunch and spend a couple of hours pottering (to drive about 1 hour 44) and then just over an hour to Monmouth.

In London, on Day 4 you will have loads of time free. I would suggest that after you have been to the Tower, you catch a boat down the Thames from the nearby pier to Greenwich. Have lunch there and then you can either tube or boat it back again all the way to Westminster Pier and then it is about an 18 minute walk to Buckingham Palace.

Just so you know, you may have to change plans last minute. The weather in February is likely to be cold and it is one of the months when there is the most snow. Keep checking the weather forecasts as you may not be able to use small roads if the snow is bad. London is generally fine, but the further north you go, the more likely you are to have problems.

As for the final day, if there is an option to leave the hire car at the airport, I would go from Edinburgh rather than drive all the way down to London. If the weather is bad, it would be a horrible journey and you might miss your flight.

Forget the 'get drunk' ideas and you'll have a great time.

If you wander around any city drunk, you're asking to get beaten up or robbed.

Also, if you still have alcohol in your bloodstream the next morning, which is usual, you can still get jailed. Anyway - only idiots need to get drunk to have fun!

There would be no point getting a car until you're well outside London - you can't park anywhere, and very few of the hotels have carparks. Leave your car on the street and you'll find it minus wheels and probably minus an engine the next day.

Hire a car when you're about to leave.

Your estimated times are very optimistic.

Just getting out of London would take an hour or more. The journey to Canterbury another 2 hours minimum.

From there to Salisbury is going to take 3 hours, and although the journey time to Oxford is about right, you have to leave your car outside the town because there are no carparks there. They have Park'n'Ride places - but it can take an extra hour to get into the centre and then back to your car.

The rest of your itinerary looks about right, but add at least 30 minutes to each leg of your journey.

And bear in mind that if the motorway gets blocked by a crash, you could be stuck there for hours.

Last week I took 2 hours 30 minutes longer than my usual 25 minutes to drive home from work because the whole M5 motorway was closed for over 12 hours.

I appreciate what you say about driving in a blizzard, but you don't understand what Britain is like when it snows - we're never, ever ready for it. It can take hours for even the motorways to get cleared by snowploughs, and most of the other roads get closed completely. They get blocked by broken-down vehicles and accidents.

So - forget about getting drunk - add extra times to your journey guesses, and sight-see (not site - that the web thing) all over our lovely country!

    Have fun!

P.S. Bring an umbrella. And Wellington boots.

Stonehenge is interesting for less then an hour, maybe two if you've travelled 4000 miles to see it, but you can probably fit a good deal more in that day. Maybe Avebury or Salisbury Cathedral And a lot of your drive times seem hopelessly optimistic particularly the Edinburgh London one (Its out of the question) and the ones while you are in Wales

Source(s): They are unrealisitic, regardless of weather and traffic, for example the fastest express train (dubbed the flying scotsman) from Edinburgh to London takes over 4 hours (it stops only once, at Newcastle and travels at speeds well over 100mph in places)

I would pick up the car on day 5 and save some cash. Driving in London is not a pleasure.

Take a nice new, up to date GPS.

A day in Cardiff? - not interesting enough.

    Have fun!

If you are spending your first few days in London, you do not need to pick a car up at the airport. I'm not sure about where you're staying in London, but unless its right on the outskirts, you're not going to need the car, you're going to have issues with parking it, and no doubt have to pay congestion charge because you won't know a route to avoid it. Additionally, you'll be paying extra days when you don't need the car because you can't take it anywhere near the monuments you want to see, so its pretty pointless.

Go via Snowdonia from Aberystwyth to Liverpool

It's a stunning part of the county and you can always climb some mountains to work off the booze

Note that most hire cars in the UK are stick shift and gas is over $13 a gallon in the UK, its sold in litres to make things even more difficult

I suggest you leave the"find a car" bit until you are outside London. It will be a liability. You will have great difficulty parking it and have to pay a congestion charge.
