What does bourbon taste like?

The drink, not the chocolate biscuit, that is. I've never drank alcohol, but I'm curious about what bourbon tastes like because all my favourite characters in books/plays/TV shows drink it (Damon from Vampire Diaries, Brick from Cat On A Hot Tin Roof etc.) What kind of flavour/taste does it have? What other foods/drinks does it taste like?

Thanks:D

It's really hard to compare to anything. It's obviously similar to other whiskeys like scotch and Canadian.

It has the "burn" and feel similar to any spirit. It definitely has more character than something like vodka (a neutral spirit). Overall, bourbon (and other whiskeys) are very sour, which can be slightly nauseating at first to be honest. Different bourbons may have different "notes", or subtle flavours. Among these may be vanilla, oak, corn, toffee, etc.

If you're curious, you could always try a dish that uses cooked-down bourbon for flavour. I've had bourbon chicken, ham, etc. Jack Daniels (while not technically bourbon, is very close) is a popular ingredient in sauces. You might get some ideas of the notes by trying some of these dishes.

It has a bit of caramel flavor to it. That's not to say it's like eating a caramel candy, because it tastes more like alcohol than candy. So if you've ever had strong alcohol just imagine some buttery caramel flavor hiding in the background of that.
