Why do people think that anyone with a gun will be able to kill a mass shooter?

Are the cowboy fantasies in their mind this out of control? I keep hearing people say "if that teacher would have had a gun none of those kids would have been killed!" as if she was a trained sniper and could hit her target under that amount of stress while he is firing at her with an AR-15.

Same thing about Aurora.."if I had been there with my concealed weapon I would have taken that guy out and saved a lot of lives!" As if he wasn't wearing body armor and a deflective shield on his head....and like people weren't running in screaming and breathing tear gas. If you start firing at someone in a crowd when people are running in the dark and the bad guy is wearing a bullet proof vest, the odds are a million times greater that you will take out several movie goers instead of him.

So, are these people delusional or what?

Update:

Edit: Notice how these nuts think the only two options are: a) fire a gun toward a shooter in the dark with hundreds of people running in between you or b) Just give up and lay down to die. They never seem to see the gray area like possibly...duck, take cover or run and call 911 so the people who know what they are doing can get there as soon as possible. No wonder they all need guns, they can't figure out any other solutions so they just stand there scratching their chin going "wut do we do ya'll? I reckon we just lay down and let this feller shoot us!"

Update 2:

Edit: "OutToLunch"...I see you still haven't returned. You just proved my point. Even trained police officers panic and can't do anything. Or they shoot innocent bystanders and add to the carnage.

Update 3:

Edit: Why do so many of these people still dwell on what happened in freaking 1776?? Good grief. I picture all of these people taking part in those nutty Civil War re-enactments.

Update 4:

Edit: You poor things actually buy Nick Meli's story? In case anyone missed it, this guy claims he pulled his gun (while hiding behind a pole) at the Clackamas Mall and while the Oregon shooter was on a rampage he spotted this Nick guy hiding behind a pole (with hundreds of people running around like crazy) and he killed himself out of fear. Bwahahahahaha. The guy shot himself because the police got there 1 minute after 911 was called. This Nick kid has created this whole delusional hero story in his mind. What he actually did was run and hide in a store. He even admits this. He says he decided not to fire and then went and hid in a store. The media LOVES a citizen hero story. They would have been all over this if there was an ounce of truth to it.

Exactly what I'm saying! Their just delusional man. Never in the history has some redneck with a hunting rifle who just happen to have a gun stopped a mass shooting. NEVER. These mass shooting lunatics are always stopped by (1) Police ,or (2) Armed Security. Some civilian will not have the balls to take on a mad man with an AR-15 using his pistol. That is the same argument NRA junkies have been using for years as an excuse for pro-guns laws "Oh if person X had a gun, the shooter would have been stopped". That is the epitome of a delusional person. The easiest way to solve this problem is to hire armed security guards at schools. Just take out 60,000 and hire two. Simple.

@Jaker: A Security or Police are more effective because they are TRAINED for this type of work. This is their JOB. That is why. This is what they do, they have thousands of hours of fire arms training, legal training, rules of engagement, education on a plethora of weaponry and combat tactics. They are also equipped with shotguns, an M-16 rifle, body armor, and a plethora of other equipment to handle dangerous situations. And not to mention they work as a team and have the resources of dispatching hundreds of men to the scene by radio. That is why.

Some farmer with a hunting rifle, who "thinks" he knows his weapon, he dont. A Civilian is not trained in Combat tactics, weaponry, nor has the equipment and resources nor body armor to handle shootings. I can not believe you are trying to compare a Trained Police officer to some wannabe robo cop civilian.

Anti-gunners refuse to assess the convenience of the situation: if the mass shooter and a concealed carrier are trying to shoot at each other, that means the mass shooter is no longer shooting at you and you have an opportunity to get the hell out. But often times when the concealed carrier reveals his gun to the mass shooter, that is when the mass shooter takes his life.

Just recently in Moore Oklahoma we had an ISIS-motivated psychopath behead a co-worker at a food processing plant. But before he could strike another victim, the manager of the establishment pulled out an AR15 and shot and injured the attacker several times. This story was nowhere on mainstream media, because it didn't suit the anti gun, anti self-defense agenda. The shooter at Clackamas Town Center did manage to kill two people before he stopped to reload; when a concealed carrier took out his gun and pointed it at the shooter, the shooter then committed suicide.

This is why I believe gun-free zones have to be dealt away with. If a person intending to do harm stumbles across an establishment where people are allowed to carry, he will think twice before attacking. I would feel safer in an open carry friendly establishment such as Best Buy, than to be inside a post office.

Anyone with a gun would have had a better chance of stopping any of the shooters than someone without a gun, Sparky. How do you know how much and what types of training the teachers have had? SOme people take firearms training very seriously and train and compete to hone their skills for just such an occurrence. By your lack of intelligent reasoning, cops shouldn't carry guns, either, because we never know how they will react in a stressful situation. I saw a cop drop his gun once because he got so scared when he had to pull it out.

Andrew, "some farmers with hunting rifles" defeated the British back in 1776. I guess you never got that lesson in your gubmint skul, eh? Tell us what department has "thousands of hours of fire arms training, legal training, rules of engagement, education on a plethora of weaponry and combat tactics." The longest academy in the country is only about 30 weeks long. That's a total of about 1200 hours class time to learn EVERYTHING that needs to be taught. I believe your numbers are a bit off (so are you).

"Why do so many of these people still dwell on what happened in freaking 1776??" Because, Sparky, the rights that were fought for then are STILL relevant today. For instance, your right to prove you are a moron through freedom of speech here.

People who take the time a PRACTICE their response to a given situatio are less likely to panic and more likely to take the proper action. Why do you think the military practices fighting wars?

Do you suggest we just surrender to the shooters? I'll stand right behind you on that score, Sparky. After you fall, I'll fire.

All this talk of having a gun to shoot at someone who has a high powered rifle and many clips is pure speculation. Until you are actually in a situation where guns are being fired, you have no idea how you would react. It's a situation where the events happen so unexpectedly, so fast and so out of your control, there is no way to predict the true outcome. Like with most of life, you might think you know how you would react in a situation but you really don't know, until you've experienced it.

Deterrence works. Ever hear of MAD? The deterrence that saved ours and the USSR's collective fannies for @ 50 years. Long enough for you to grow into one more smug condescending fool. That was nuclear ICBM--this is guns. BUT same idea.

In Israel the teachers walk among their students with a hand gun strapped to their side. In the pioneer days a teacher here kept a hand gun openly on the desk. Or, a long gun nearby. Both against the savages of the times. Those among and those outside the area.

In the Oregon shootings, the man did shoot himself yes. Now, why? Because a CHL violated the Gun Free Zone mall policy. He drew, aimed and HELD his fire. Because a civilian had walked into the field of fire BEHIND the mass shooter. The mass shooter heard the sound of a gun being drawn and ******. He turned--found a hand gun pointed dead at him. He then selected to kill himself.

Deterrence WORKS. Nor are we all dreaming wannabe cowboys. Who are too incompetent to deal with owning such an advanced weapon over and above an OWS brick. Many are vets. Many are well trained civilians. Many are hunters. Many are off duty officers of the LAW. We are not ignorant natives who have no idea how to be civilized.

It is you and yours who are delusional. To think yourselves smugly superior in intellect, class and status as a human being to the rest of us "unwashed" natives.

We--I refuse your claim to being a better class to judge me. I refuse to be treated like a 19th century native African by you smug English Empire high brow types.

Who won't wipe their own fanny unless Uncle Sam forces someone else to pay for the TP.

Something people need to understand that seems lacking with many....

neither "mass shooters" nor Islamic terrorists are mystical brilliant people with skills unconquerable.

There is nothing delusional about wanting to protect oneself or others. There is nothing delusional about believing that you, or others, can in fact do just that. Had someone been in these places with a firearm to defend themselves it may have changed nothing but it may have just as well....sitting defenseless is not the better option (at least not when it comes to me or to what I would prefer as to my children).

EDIT: Your extra comments show who has the delusions. No one has said it is between shooting in the dark and dieing. Good Lord! Think out your thoughts more fully and go beyond silly bumper sticker limitations with your words.

How about the Ft. Hood shooting? Thirteen people were killed and the shooting occurred at a military base! Then there was the killing in New York where the police shot the suspect in the street and wound up wounding several bystanders. Nice shooting by trained professionals!

@Andrew: How is a police officer or an armed security guard significantly more effective than any other person who is armed and knows how to use his/her weapon. There is a reason why these nuts always pick places where they think no one will be armed. The shooter in OR ran when an armed bystander took aim at him.

I don't have a gun. But, I would feel safer having cowboys around me with guns.

I would rather get attacked in a red state among yahoos carrying guns, than in a blue state. I would be saved in a red state, and found dead in a dumpster in a blue state.
