Do baseball gloves catch better as they get older?

Or do newer ones catch better?

Somehow, this makes me laugh at the thought of how people (myself included) immediately look at their glove when they miss a ball hit their way. lol (watch, it happens nearly every time) But to the point, they make gloves nowadays that are already broke in, like jeans. But I think gloves get better as they age and easier to manipulate. Have a nice day :)

Yes and no. A brand new glove is not going to be very good at catching. You have to break in the glove in order for it to be an easy catch. However, after years of use your glove is going to start to deteriorate. My 8th or 9th grade year I used a 2nd hand glove from a family member and it got so old that it would turn my hand black every time I put my hand in it.

Hello, my name is Tom with JustBallGloves.com. I came across your question and thought we could help you out. Typically a glove that has been properly broken in will catch better than a glove that is brand new. It is very easy to keep a glove in excellent shape even after extensive use. If you notice your glove is drying out and the leather is cracking, your glove's laces will have a higher chance of breaking. To prevent that from happening apply a thin layer of glove oil (preferably with a sponge) every week or two weeks during the season. Here is a link to our Glove Care Guide for other great glove care tips.

  • The older ones do as long as you take care of them and put them away during the off season.

This does not mean throwing it in the trunk or leaving it in your equipment bag. I have had the same glove (Mizuno) for 20 + years and it is still in great condition. This month is the first time I decided to have it relaced. The glove is perfect.

It is well broken in and during the off season I put a softball in it and put it away.

Neither. Its when a baseball mitt is "broken" it catches better. Broken means that the mitt is not hard like a new one, it will be easy to bent and the middle of the mitt there is a "lock" for the ball to stay in. The easiest way to "break" your mitt is to play catch so the ball will shape itself into the mitt

The more you use it the better it will be. Just keep it in good playing condition.

It doesn't have anything to do with age, rather how much you use it.

you have to break them by using them
