What the Mayans predicted was that the Earth, the Sun and the center of our Milky-way were going to line up, so they decided to stop their calender at that point. That's all, no "Apocalypse" no "Nebru" no "Solar Flares" just a point to end their calender at. The descendants of the Mayans are waiting to start a new calender cycle, just like the way we start a new year.

However on the mayan calender, it was never written that the world is going to end etc. People invented these kinds of stories as they did not know actually why the calender ends at 21 dec 2012. Religion says something big may happen, this doesnt mean only bad things. They say they ran out of space etc. This could not be said with guarentee as it is said that the mayan calender could predict many things centuries in future. To conclude, The world may not end on 21 dec 2012, maybe something big might happen and stop believing on all nonsense stuffs people add on the internet.
