Why do people say "bless you" after you sneeze?

I know everyone says it, but why?

    It was one of the first signs of the plague, so people did it in case you had plague and were gonna die from it.

    The first sign of the Black death was sneezing...Bless You was a short prayer to keep you from harm.

    It was said in Medieval Europe during the Black Plague. They thought this would ward off the disease. I like "Gesundheit" better.

    It was started by the natives. Something about evil spirits not being able to attack you. Then they said bless you to keep evil spirits away. That's what I heard.
