Why can't I open .exe files in Windows 8?
I just got a new computer with Windows 8 and I am unable to install any programs. I download from my web browser, click to open the completed download, and am then asked how I want to proceed with the download. When I click "Run" or "Save" the window disappears and nothing else happens. No suddenly installed software, nothing. I've re-downloaded the file, tried downloading different files, and have downloaded from different sources and browsers. I've also tried opening the downloaded file from different places. Why can't I install anything? How can I fix the problem? Microsoft support hours are over and I really need to be able to install software on this computer! Any help would be much appreciated. :) Thank you.
Windows 8 has actually been a very special nightmare for me and I would recommend that no one buy it, ever. And for your information, the software was to supplement Windows 8, so it was FOR Windows 8. Thanks anyways.
By the way, my birthday was a few days ago and since my son recently spilled water all over my original laptop, this computer was bought for me as a gift. And it was difficult to find a computer with Windows 7, which I would have preferred. Most computers are being made with 8 now.

Uh, because they probably aren't compatible with win8? Why do people jump all over a new O.S. when it isn't close to being proven?
