California gun law for handguns?

My grandfather passed down to me a WWII CZ "DOU" .25 pistol. A war trophy from the war. Is to true if I want to legally own this firearm to use it for home defense and target shooting that the pistol has to be registered under my name via a FFL dealer?

No..since it is a transfer from family member to family member it doesnt have to go through a FFL dealer..but you do have complete form FD 4542 and file it with DOJ Firearms Division.

The transfer of firearms between immediate family members is exempt from the law requiring private party transfers to be conducted through a licensed firearms dealer. For purposes of this exemption, “immediate family” means parent and child, and grandparent and grandchild but does not include brothers or sisters.

Please note if the firearm being transferred is a handgun, prior to taking possession of the firearm, the transferee must comply with the Handgun Safety Certificate requirement described below. Within 30 days of the transfer he/she must also submit a report of the transaction to DOJ.

You may obtain the required report form (FD 4542) by contacting the DOJ Firearms Division at

    (916) 227-3703 or you can download the form yourself from the Firearms Division

    web site at www.ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms.

    Home defense?

When a home has a gun, the people in it are four times MORE likely to die in an attempted burglary, than homes with no guns.

Also, there are accidents, there are shootings due to someone getting supremely brassed off, or being drunk and becoming enraged; and there are incidents of children getting their hands on them and shooting themselves or someone else; then there's use of home weapons for suicide.

Homes without guns are MUCH safer than homes WITH guns. All a person need do is forget to completely lock everything away ONCE, to have a high risk of a fatal shooting of a family member.

Just saying. Of course, the "Best" answer was that detailed one about how to follow the law.

No reason to register it, just keep it ready for an emergency.
