What does that expiration date on my visa really mean?

My canadian study permit expires on December 31st 2012. I am currently home in the states for christmas, can I still enter canada on december 31st?

Update:

also, I have applied for an extension to my student visa and it is being processed.

Canadian citizens do not need visas to study in the U.S. However, you do need to obtain an I-20 (or DS-2019) Certificate of Eligibility from the university that you plan to attend. At the time you receive the I-20 (or DS-2019) you will be registered with SEVIS, the student tracking system. You will be assigned a SEVIS number, and be required to pay a registration fee. When you cross the border to study you will need to provide the Officer at the port of entry:

Usually an expiration date means you can use it up through that date.

The website states this. "You can find the visa expiration date and the visa issuance date on the visa that is issued to you. Based on the type of visa, there is a period of time "between" the visa issuance date and the visa expiration date, which is the validity of your visa.

The key words are validity is between the dates which would include the dates of issuance and expiration.

This is confirmed by a second site.
