Are the majority of Catholics cafeteria Catholics?
I'm reading time magazine's truly depressing issue on Barack Obama as person of the year. I like the man, and think he's good at leading, but I just can't get on board with his fundamental vision for America, one which I believe deeply conflicts with traditional Catholic teaching. And yet Obama won among American Catholics, and overwhelmingly so among Hispanic Catholics (who in a lot of ways are more devout than European American Catholics). I disagree with Obama's vision on many levels, but it is his views on abortion and gay marriage that are irreconcilable with Catholicism. How could so many Catholics ago against the direct teaching of the church and bishops, who specifically exhort their members to vote pro-life? How could so many Catholics vote for this culture of secularism that America is rapidly becoming? How could so many Catholics go against the direct teachings of the Church in both their views and their votes?
You can't compartmentalize like that. Your values come from religion, and your values are going to shape your political views and how you vote.
Your values come from your lack of religion, which is why you support secular values such as gay marriage and abortion. Don't pretend that ones religion or lack of religion has no influence on their political choices. How many atheist republicans do you know?
I expect some of them will attack me later for saying this the Devil's Bane. Thanks for your solidarity at least.

Reuters/Ipsos exit polling found that 51 percent of self-identified Catholics favored President Barack Obama, compared with 48 percent for Republican contender Mitt Romney. A report by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life had a similar finding, with 50 percent of Catholics for Obama and 48 percent for Romney, the same as the popular vote in the general population. Hispanic Catholics were far more likely to favor Obama - by 76 percent to 23 percent - than white Catholics, who favored Romney by 56 percent to 43 percent, according to the Reuters poll.
HOWEVER: The Pew survey found that among those voters who attend services once a week or more, 59 percent went for Romney, while 39 percent went with Obama. Among those who never attend church, six in ten went for Obama.
Now, if you do not attend Mass, you are not a practicing Catholic, whatever your ethnic or historical ties to the faith. Of practicing Catholics, 39% chose a man who attacks religious freedom, favors any and every abortion, and has committed himself to redefining marriage to include non-marriage, effectively degrading the institution responsible for the family. These 39% must be considered "cafeteria Catholics" who reject Christian ethics. The 59% of practicing Catholics, a majority, are not cafeteria Catholics.

The reason why President Obama got 50% of the Catholic vote was because of the Hispanics and it had nothing to do with President Obama's HHS mandate regarding Catholic institutes providing insurance that covers contraceptives, sterilization operations, and abortive drugs, or that he is Pro-Abortion, or that he supports same sex marriage. Why the Hispanics voted for him was because of President Obama's stance on immigration.
But you are correct most Catholics today are not really Catholic at all and according to my own personal beliefs if you are not a practicing Catholic you are not even a Christian. And yes I know there will be fake Catholics that will thumb me down for stating this obvious fact.

I cannot imagine any devout Catholic voting for Obama or anyone else that is not only supportive of murdering unborn babies but also are supportive of the destruction of marriage. Any Catholic who voted for them has committed a mortal sin and must repent and seek forgiveness before receiving the blessed sacrament.
Obama has also been acting tyrannical towards the Catholic Church and is threatening Catholics with forcing us to commit mortal sin in order to continue or charity work in the US.
Many claiming to be Catholic are Catholics in name only and are cultural Catholics who do not practice but identify as Catholics in polls.I pray that these are the ones in the polls claiming to support this evil tyrannical leader. God bless!

you're properly suited that in simple terms about all of Catholic are "cafeteria Catholics" some people look to have faith that as long as they are anti-abortion they are "holier than thou". despite the fact that, in simple terms because of fact each and every person is doing it does not advise that that's solid. The Catholic Church isn't a democracy, that's a company with regulations and management. in case you do not settle for the regulations than you do not belong to the club. There are 100s of Christian church homes with multitudes of solutions for various questions. in case you do not in straight forward terms like the Catholic church homes solutions i'm useful which you will hit upon one that works for you. no person is calling you to be "blindly unswerving" in case you do not think of the Catholic Church is actual coaching Jesus' coaching than i might think of which you may prefer to locate a church that does.

....because the United States is not a Catholic theocracy.
Most people are capable of separating the political commands of their religious leaders from their political discourse. You, apparently, aren't among them.
Additionally, this country has far bigger concerns than your pet wedge issues of abortion and gay marriage.
>> UPDATE: Speak for yourself. You can't. *I* can... and evidence shows (from your own observations) that many others can as well.
... and my values didn't come from religion... thankyouverymuch.
>> UPDATE: You make a lot of unsubstantiated assumptions about me and my positions.... and I know a quite a few conservative atheists. One is a full-on Objectivist. He even has a bumper sticker on his car that reads "Ayn Rand was RIGHT!"
But please.. continue.... I like being told what I believe in and what I think by others. I would also like to know what my favorite food is, what kind of music I like, and what I want for Christmas....

Are you gay? The only children I have seen whine more than you were wanting to be fed in the middle of the Mass.

You're here picking childish fights again, and it's getting old and stale. This was so much better a place when you were gone. Can you hear that place calling you back?

Yes. They go to the cafeteria sounds like bacteria and ride the devil on horseback until they get bucked off. You know, prunes and bacon with something. Roasted with toothpicks through them?
