The information on a Blu Ray disc is stored in a manner that allows it told hold about 4 times as much data than a DVD. To write and extract the date, the blue laser is required, which is where the name "Blu Ray" comes from.

Because their is far more data on the Blu Ray disc, your movies on them can have much higher resolution and superior audio.

The question is, do you really need a Blu Ray player. If you do not have a large TV (36" or bigger), then it is unlikely you will notice much difference at all in the higher quality images. If you do not have a decent surround sound audio system, then it's unlikely that you will notice an audio difference. And no, the home theater in a box systems do not qualify as a decent surround sound system.

Yes there is a difference. I own one of the best upconverting Blu Ray players on the market. My LG Super Blu player does a great job upconverting regular DVD's. I have actually tricked some friends into thinking they were watching hi def. Then I put in a Blu Ray or an HD DVD just when they thought the picture couldn't get any better. They are blown away as there is a big difference. The larger your screen is the bigger the difference will be. A 1080p picture on a larger 1080p screen is the best of the best and yes you can tell.

A Blue laser (smaller wavelength) is used to read the smaller pits (info) on the disk. That's how they pack 4 times the info on the same size disk. See Pic. A Blu-Ray file is HD 1080p ver DVD 480p. Like going from basic cable to one step above HD cable. (HD cable is broadcast @720p). 1080 horizontal lines of resolution vers only 480. Gives way clearer picture.

because of the wavelength difference between red and blue, (or a red laser for standard DVDs and blue laser for bluray), the bluray disks can four times as much information as a standard dvd. This allows more video information to be stored, creating more lines of video, the more lines of video the more accurate detailed the video will be

Blu ray players can take blue ray discs, blu ray discs have more space on the which makes itable to run a movie in higher definition =)

BluRay players can play BluRay discs, which can hold HD movies and have more storage space for extras than regular DVDs. A BluRay player can also play regular DVDs, but a regular DVD player can't play BluRay.

The downside is some Blue ray players will not play for example CDR/RW discs or VCDS. The only reason I would use Blue ray is to back up my computer; fact of matter they were originally designed for that purpose.
