Why do people consider Mexicans/Guatemalans mestizos & Dominicans/Puerto Ricans Black?

Me & my boyfriend went to Allentown yesterday (which is %70 Hispanic)

We met & saw a bunch of Dominicans & Puerto Ricans, almost all of whom were clearly mixed race. Yes, many were brown skinned mulattos, but you could tell they were mixed.

Then we saw the Mexicans. Mainly the Mexican & Guatemalan people in my State (in in New Jersey, New York as well) look Indigenous. And yes, some do look Mestizos. The only place I saw were most Mexicans actually looked legitimate Mestizo was in Texas & Chihuahua state.

Most Mexicans I see on a daily basis do not look Mestizo.

However, most Dominicans & Puerto Ricans I see on a daily basis do look Mixed race.

Example: Alex Rodriguez & Kat Due Luna versus Haitian Wyclef Jean.

I would also add that I had met a few West African looking Dominicans, but they had French first & last names, which meant there were probably of Haitian descendants.

Why do people considered Mexicans/ Guatemalan/ Honduras/Salvadorians people "Mestizos"

Than go around & say "Puerto Ricans & Dominicans are Black". (Especially Dominicans)

In my opinion, mixed race mulatto's are not Black. To be Black you should be at least 70%Black.

Every Central American country (except Belize) & Mexico claim a mestizo majority.

However, its quite obvious that on average Puerto Ricans have more Spanish blood than Mexicans.

Pretty much the media like L for Lonely said..... Latin Americans are very diverse Mestizo is no longer used in Latin America. Here in NYC most Puerto Ricans I have seen either look African or Arab. One of my Puerto Rican friend is a Mestizo and classifies himself with White since he looks Mediterranean and has a lot of European ancestry. Puerto Rico is 80% White (Mestizos included). Same thing with Brazil but they use the Mestico the Brazilian census has also added them with White people. For some reason Mexican census has put Mestizo to a mixed race which represent 60% but I they should somehow label Mestizos as White in Mexico. Take a look at the Mexican president Felipe Calderon or the Mexican model Ximena Navarrate they're Mestizos but they look European. I don't know much about Texas but here in New York Mexicans look 100% Native or East Asian and look no where near the Mexicans back in Cali who I believe are Mestizos. I even heard there is a term called Indio Mestizo with more Native ancestry, they are Euro Mestizos with more Euro ancestry which I believe I mentioned Felipe and Ximena, and Afro Mestizo with more African ancestry. I think every Latin American is a Mestizo weather you are Black, White, or Native. Forget about this whole half Spanish and half Native that's just a caste system invented by the Spanish. Every human being is a Mestizo even Black & White Americans which so many people are ignorant about. I think Latin America esp Mexico needs to organize it's census I think most Mexicans are more Native Mestizos you can tell by their features unless if they have come from Northern Mexico which is mostly White and usually if you are living in Texas, New Mexico, California, Nevada, or Colorado most Mexicans would look Mediterranean since most parts they usually come from the Northern areas. I would say 30-40 of Mexicans living in Southern America might come from South/Central

Source(s): PS: Alex Rodriguez is an Afro Mestizo

Puerto Ricans and even Dominicans on average have more European ancestry than the typical Mexican. Puerto Ricans are 65% European on average and Dominicans are a little bit more than 50%. But Mexicans are mostly balanced Mestizos but the mix varies from family to family and region to region. Guatemalans are probably 75% Indigenous, 25% European on average, although Salvadorans are more like balanced Mestizos though just like Mexicans. Puerto Ricans and Dominicans often look darker than Mexicans and Central Americans though because they have large amounts of Black african ancestry which makes the people look darker.

I blame this on the Media, Though on several occasions now i have heard that most Mexicans claim to be "Mestizo" as for Guatemalans, i do not know much about them so i cannot say anything on there behalf, as for Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, i have heard that most Puerto Ricans are actually white, or Castizo, and i know nothing of Dominicans, The Media has alot to due with the way certain people view others.

Truth is most Dominicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans have substantial African ancestry. More than any other Hispanic. They have the largest Afro Hispanic populations. Technically they are african or ***** or black.

Mexico and Guatemala have the highest populations of Amerindians and Mestizo populations in Latin America. Mexico and Guatemala Afro populations are under 1%.

Dominicans Afro ancestry 90% population 90% are black or Mulatto Sammy Sosa, David Ortiz, Alfonso Soriano, Arlenis Sosa, Tony Dandrades, Pancho Manguera, Manny Ramirez, Amara la Negra, ARod, Romeo Santos, Kat de Luna, Manny Ramirez

Cuba Afro ancestry 65% mixed and Mulatto Celia Cruz, Yasiel Puig, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Kid Chocolate Peter Quillan, Laz Alonso, Gina Torres,

Puerto Rico Carlos Delgado, Tego Calderon, La La Vasquez, Carmelo Anthony, Rosie Perez, Lauren Velez, Zoe Saldana also part Dominican, Ivy Queen, Victor Cruz, Rosario Dawson, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Don Omar, Naya Rivera, Myhcal Rivera, Javier Colon,

Mestizo is a term that means a mixture of white and indian. The slave trade brought far more blacks to the Caribbean than it did to central America. They claim puerto ricans and dominicans are mixed because well most of them are mixed with black. Black features are quite dominant. Many dominicans and puerto ricans have black features (darker skin, hair texture, nose shape, etc.) where as mestizos do not have the black ancestory. However, that is not to say that there are not puerto ricans and dominicans with white ancestory which indeed would make them mestizo. Also you need to remember that spaniards controlled more of the mainland of latin america while the english and french controlled more of the Caribbean. English and French generally have lighter feature than the spanish . I have met some puerto ricans that look no different than white people while others I couldn't tell they were not black. And Guatemala has a higher majority of indigenous than mestizo.

I don't know about the ethnic breakdown of Mexicans in the area in which you live, but the overwhelming majority of Mexicans are in fact Mestizo, and according to genetic studies, the typical Mestizo Mexican is on average slightly more European than Native. Although, the degree of admixture can vary from individual to individual, which is why some Mestizos may look essentially White, while others may look essentially Native. The same is also true of other Latinos from mixed backgrounds, like Puerto Ricans and Domincans. The majority look mixed, but some may look essentially white, while others may look essentially black. For the record; I've never heard anyone describe Alex Rodriguez as "Black".

There's really too much diversity found in the majority of Latin American countries to put them into entirely separate racial categories. And just as it's wrong for others to try to force racial labels onto Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, it's also wrong for you to suggest that "To be Black you should be at least 70%Black." Based on your definition, there would be many African Americans who wouldn't be classified as Black, even though they personally identify as Black.

The "mestizaje" don't include only people with Amerindian/Spanish descent, in the case of Mexico and Central America, most of "mestizos" are "indio-mestizos" or Mestizo/Amerindian, in the case of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, much of them are mulattoes, Black/Spanish. Costa Rica and Puerto Rico are the only countries in Central America/Caribbean/Mexico, with a large caucasian population (85% and 75% respectively), then, follow in far place Guatemala 18.5%, Nicaragua 17%, Dominican Republic 16%, Mexico 15%, Panama 10%, El Salvador 8%, Belize 3% and Honduras 1%.
