Motorcycle riding after back surgery?

I recently --October 2012--had a lower back fusion surgery (L-4 to L-5) metal plates, screws, fake disc.. how soon should I be able to ride again? I asked my surgeon and he kind of shrugged his shoulders and said he didn't know.

you start by going to physical therapy 5 times a week or depending on what your doctor orders work with the therapist to build up your arm strength and your torso and core you need to be able to push with one arm and pull with the other without destroying your lower back. Work with the therapist on some routine similar to what the handlo bars would be if your bike has a center stand sit on the bike and practice pushing one handle bar and pulling the other as this is the motion you need to know.

If you need more resistance on the front tire let air out of it and it gets hard as hell to turn. practice until you can do it comfortably for 20 minutes or so and when you can do it reasonably free of pain and agony with out pain medication you are ready for a 10 or 15 minute ride. Limit yourself take friends in case you drop the bike I or be damn sure you wont drop it) do a easy ride at first if you need to, the stamina and the strength will come back wild man mine did but dont be stupid and make an honest assesment of your situation my bikr was a jap bike with a center stand and with the front tire almost flat it was near impossible to move even pulling hard with one hand and pushing on the bars with the other so the strength which you need is built up. You need to be sure you can handle your bike.

Its actually easy as hell to ride there is very little effort to turn the bars or anything else but you want to have the stamina and strength to take the bike bach home if you need too. good luck man

Source(s): been there worked hard twisting a flat front tire back and forth with the handle bars until I built of the confidence and strength to ride my bike for 10 or fifteen minutes. Once I got that down I drove to the clinic of the doctor who told me I would never ride a bike again and went to a clinic appointment with my helmet in my hand. Her first question was " how did you get off the percodan and valium so fast?" and she looked up and saw the helmet in my hand her nest words I will always chersih " your crazy" said my doctor.

How the heck are we supposed to know lol? Try and ask your surgeon what you can do to maybe speed up the recovery time or something. I guess he doesnt know how long you should stay off the bike because everyone recovers differently but Im suprised he couldnt even give you a bit more advice than an "i dont know".

So I guess youll just have to find out on your own. I guess once youre able to do most physical activities you should be fine to ride again but you be the judge of that. You know your body better than we do.

My surgeon said 6 months after my L4-L5 TLIF (screws, rods, spacer, fusion). I feel that I can get on my 1200 Sportster today and ride, 4 weeks post-op, with no problems. Its the vibrations he's worried about and of course if I should go down (God forbid). I think I may wear my brace under my vest for added protection once i do ride. 5 more months!!!!!!!!

If your surgeon can't tell you how are we going to ?!?!

Best I can tell you is try a few short trips and see how it feels.

neither do we nor what risks you are prepared to take nor at what cost. Maybe there is a compromise where you get to keep walking, wipe your **** and live longer.
