Yes they are. They just avoid humans as much as possible. Humans are the most destructive force on Earth.

You decide for yourself. We live on a planet that is over 4.5 Billions Years old and continue to discover things we believe have been extinct. They just found a fully intact carcass of a Whale that existed 2 million years ago on a beach. It is estimated that we only know 1/2 percent of 1 percent of what is actually in the ocean on the surface of the earth and we know all kinds of things about the solar system and the Universe.
I am always amazed at those who can say what has not existed on a 4.5 Billion year old planet.

No they do no exist. I believe it was that sailors spent months at sea and seen dolphins and called them mermaids or were hallucinating.

Yes, they just don't want to be found. They like to be with their own kind. Away from what might destroy them.
Source(s): My family's ansetors apparetly hails from mermaids. There is a lot of talk about mermaids in my family. Which is probably why we are so tall and skinny. Most of us have blonde and red hair and blue eyes. With fair skin. We always get complamemts on our looks :)
